How to Design the Perfect Family Banquette: Stylish, Practical, and Space-Saving
How to Design a Banquette for a Family Kitchen
Banquettes are a hot topic for us at the moment, and we are delighted to be designing a few for our clients with families. Not everybody likes a banquette, but we are huge advocates. A well-designed banquette can be the heart of a family kitchen—practical, space-saving, and effortlessly charming. Whether you’re gathering the kids for breakfast, hosting friends for coffee, or overseeing homework while making dinner, a banquette offers a cosy and clever solution to maximise both style and function. Here’s what to consider when designing the perfect banquette for your family kitchen:
1. Make the Most of Hidden Storage
If you're always looking for extra space to stash kids' art supplies, table linens or board games, a banquette with built-in storage is a no-brainer. The bench seat can lift up to reveal a generous hidden compartment—ideal for things you don’t need every day but still want close to hand. This is especially useful in smaller kitchens where every inch counts. To keep it easy and family-friendly, consider soft-close hinges and compartments that are simple to access, even for little hands.

2. Or Keep It Open for Flexibility
On the other hand, if you don’t want to commit to built-in storage, leaving the space under your banquette open can create a lighter, more relaxed look. It also allows for freer leg movement, making it feel more like a conventional seat—which can be particularly important for growing children or taller adults. Open space also gives you flexibility: slide in a couple of wicker baskets to store toys, craft materials or extra cushions. The baskets can be pulled out easily and moved around the house as needed, offering practicality without permanent commitment.

3. Use Hardwearing, Family-Friendly Fabric
We all know the kitchen is where life happens—spills, splashes, crumbs and all. Choosing an outdoor or performance fabric for your banquette cushions is a smart move for family living. These fabrics are designed to be wipeable, stain-resistant and durable, while still offering a lovely texture and feel. Opt for something in a neutral tone or soft pattern to disguise everyday wear. For added practicality, attach the seat cushion with Velcro strips underneath—this keeps it securely in place, even during the busiest mealtimes.

4. Opt for a High-End Upholstered Look
If your children are older—or if your kitchen is more of a grown-up entertaining space—a fully upholstered, fabric-covered banquette can feel luxurious and elevate the whole room. A high-end fabric such as linen blend, velvet or soft boucle adds texture and warmth, instantly making the space feel more tailored and elegant. This style works beautifully in open-plan kitchens where the dining area flows into a more formal setting, and it’s a real showstopper when you’re entertaining guests. Add a few scatter cushions in complementary tones for comfort and layered style.

5. Design Details That Make a Difference
Think about the height and depth of the seating to ensure it's comfortable for both adults and children, and don't forget to factor in table height. Adding a few scatter cushions in coordinating fabrics can make the space feel soft and inviting. A curved or L-shaped layout works brilliantly to tuck into a corner or frame a window, making the most of natural light and unused space.

Final Thoughts
A family kitchen banquette should be as practical as it is beautiful. Whether you’re prioritising hidden storage or open space, wipeable cushions or woven baskets, the goal is to create a welcoming spot where your family can gather and connect. It’s not just a seat—it’s a space where memories are made.
